Pioneering inventions, like the diesel engine itself, form an integral part of our history. The MAN Group’s origins date back to 1758 – when the St. Antony iron mill was founded in Oberhausen (Germany). That was just the start.
- The beginning of a success story:

1758: Foundation of the St. Antony iron mill, the origin of today’s MAN Group.
1787: The "Gute Hoffnung" (Good Hope) iron mill became Germany’s first rail manufacturer.
1888: Development of Germany’s first triple-expansion steam-engine.
1893 – 1897: Together with Maschinenfabrik Augsburg AG, Rudolf Diesel built the world’s first diesel engine.

1924: First diesel heavy goods vehicle with direct fuel injection.
1957: Europe’s first floating oil-drilling platform.
1970: The world’s largest planetary marine transmission at that time.

2004: MAN launches its breakthrough D20 Common Rail generation of engines.
2005: Construction of the world’s largest methanol plant M5000 in Trinidad.
2006: Delivery of the world’s biggest screw compressor to China.
2006: MAN launches 51/60 dual-fuel engine for LNG carriers.
2007: MAN launches the latest hybrid bus prototype which saves up to 30% of fuel compared to a conventional diesel bus.
